how to buy servers cheap

August 14th, 2008

very simple.

1. go to rackmountsetc.com (or your favorite hardware seller) and put together a configuration you like using their automated system.
2. go to pricewatch.com and buy the same hardware cheaper (dont forget heatsinks)

voila! you get a server with compatible hardware for at least 20% less than you would pay to the store.

work around solution to ignore a network?

August 14th, 2008

Recently, some of our customers are facing to slow network performance when the path from server back to customers goes through Chinanet. Checking with NTT support, and they said a part of ISP IP range was not advertised with NTT, but advertised with Chinanet. That’s why the path is going through NTT then Chinanet to ISP, and it seems there are many loss.

Meanwhile this ISP has connections to NTT directly too, I wonder if there is any temporary solution to ignore Chinanet?

For example
- customers using ADSL in range 11.22.33.0/20 have slow performance. 11.22.33.0/20 is advertised with Chinanet
- customer using ADSL in range 44.55.66.0/20 have good performance. 44.55.66.0/20 is advertised with NTT directly

Is there any solution for customers in range 11.22.33.0/20? NTT support said Chinanet doesn’t answer their checking tickets. Have no way to talk with Chinanet. It’s hard to talk with this ISP too. We have tried to contact them without any success.

Please advice.
Thank you.

I need to find a pretty low-power option for a customer application. My main goal is to get the fastest server with the most amount of disk that will use less than 1.08A @ 110V .. Any suggestions?

India colo

August 14th, 2008

I know hosting is limited and expensive in India usually because the infrastructure isn’t the greatest. I’ve heard of problems of building out your own infrastructure in India due to government regulations? There doesn’t seem to be a big international provider presence there. For example when I look at NIXI I don’t see any of the usual big international networks there. Are foreign companies restricted from owning and operating telecommunications services to the public there? Any advice on how to obtain privately owned servers or rack space there? Preferably in Mumbai or Delhi. Thank you.

Creating an Audio CD with mp3cd

August 14th, 2008

I guess the title tells you too much. The reality is that I was given some MP3 files and wanted to put them on a normal audio CD so the non-geeks here could listen to them. Thus, consider this a geek to non-geek conversion article.
